Echinacea Angustifolia Root & Echinacea Purpurea Root
The term 'echinacea' refers to a genera of plants, and a few species in this family including purpurea and augustifolia are desired due to their alkyl amide content (seen as the active ingredients). Overall, echinacea appears to be somewhat effective for fighting off sickness and accelerating the rate of recovery in sickness but both of these claims are highly variable.
Benefits:
Echinacea is most commonly used as support fro a healthy immune function and appears to be one of the more popular supplements used in US, Australia, and becoming more popular in North Africa, South America, and China in general.
Safety and Toxicology:
In general there are no significant side effects with echinacea, although it is possible to be allergic to the plant genus. Allergies to echinacea appear to be correlated with allergies to ragweed, and thus those with allergies to ragweed may be at higher risk of allergic responses to supplemental Echinacea.
Safety for kids:
Echinacea can cause dermatitis, but, like chamomile, it seems to be generally safe for children who aren't allergic to it. MedLine Plus says - Echinacea is POSSIBLY SAFE in children. It seems to be safe in most children ages 2-11 years. However, about 7% of these children may experience a rash that could be due to an allergic reaction.
Astragalus Root
Astragalus is used to support the immune system, healthy blood glucose levels including function and the body's response to inflammation
Safety and Toxicology:
Many studies have been done on the use of Astragalus. At recommended doses, Astragalus has no serious side effects and can generally be used safely. It does interact with other herbs and medications. People with autoimmune disease should speak with their doctor first before taking Astragalus because it may stimulate the immune system.
Safety for kids:
There is not a lot of scientific evidence about giving Astragalus to children, so ask your doctor first. Children can safely take Astragalus unless they have a fever, in which case Astragalus may prolong the fever.
Elderberry Fruit
Elderberry also contains flavonoids, which have antioxidant properties and may help prevent damage to the body’s cells.
Some evidence suggests that chemicals in elder flower and berries may support a healthy response to respiratory irritation.
Safety and Toxicology:
If you are being treated with medication, you should talk to your health care provider before taking elderberry. Herbs like elderberry can trigger side effects and interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications. For these reasons, you should use herbs only under the supervision of a health care provider.
Safety for kids:
Possibly safe, but consult with physician before use.
Licorice Root
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza plants, usually the Glabra species) have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to fairly good acclaim for digestive support and as a general vitality promoting agent.
Safety for kids:
Using the Herb Research Foundation's rule of thumb that a child's dose ought to be one-fourth to one-third of an adult's, a child should take no more than 4 or 5 grams of licorice a day. Bottom line: OK in small amounts, but be careful -- and be sure to tell your child's doctor about it.
Amla Fruit
Emblica officinalis (also referred to as Phyllanica Emblica or simply as Amla) is an herb from Indian medicine (Ayurveda) that has traditionally been used for the purposes of enhancing general vitality and cognition as well as promoting longevity
Safety and Toxicology:
No significant human studies. However, in rats, oral administration of the hydromethanolic (20:80) extract up to 2,000mg/kg over 15 days has failed to cause any clinical signs of toxicity
Safety for kids: Possibly safe, but consult with physician before use.
Shiitake Mushroom
Shiitake mushroom is used for supporting the immune system. A study titled “Consuming Lentinula Edodes (Shiitake) Mushrooms Daily Improves Human Immunity” concluded that regular L. Edodes consumption resulted in improved immunity, as seen by improved cell proliferation and activation.
Safety and Toxicology:
The appropriate dose of shiitake mushroom depends on several factors such as the user’s age, health, and several other conditions. At this time there is not enough scientific information to determine an appropriate range of doses for shiitake mushroom.
Safety for kids: Possibly safe, but consult with physician before use.
Vegetable Glycerin
Vegetable glycerin is produced using an extraction process called hydrolysis. Vegetable glycerin metabolizes differently than sugar and is used in low carbohydrate foods for sweetness and moisture.
Safety for kids:
Possibly safe, but consult with physician before use.
